Book Review: The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns.
The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns.
Why is there a serious problem in Christian witness these days? Why do Christians seem to have tarnished thier reputation almost irremediably? Why doesn't the world run to the church for solutions to their problems?
Richard argues that there is a hole in our gospel. This has been caused essentially by Christians reducing salvation to a personal, internal transaction with God with no bearing whatsoever on the world around them.
Written primarily for the North America church, the book is an eye opener and challenge to Christians about their God given mandate. But all nations can learn some significant lessons from it. Including lessons on how to respond to world poverty.
The author argues and demonstrates with figures that and how the problem of global poverty can be solved. And financial resources are not the problem, there are enough resources to go around.
Richard is careful to show that we are not saviors nor are we gods but that we are instead brothers and sisters who are called to care. To play our part. To venture out of our comfort zones.
The book also shows that we can offer our time, talent and treasures to help our neighbors. And that the size of our contribution does not matter as much as the attitude and motivation of our giving.
The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet - Frederick Buechner.
Extract from the book:
"Picture a different world. Imagine one in which two billion Christians embrace this gospel - the whole gospel - each doing a part by placing his or her piece into the puzzle and completing God stunning vision of a reclaimed and redeemed world - the kingdom of God among us. Visualize armies of compassion stationed in every corner of our world, doing small things with great love. Imagine the change. Might the world take notice? Would they ask new questions? Who are these people so motivated by love? Where did they come from? Why do they sacrifice so to help those the rest of the world has forgotten? Where do they find thier strength? Who is this God they serve? And most important, Can we serve Him too? Can you imagine this different vision of our world? Can you glimpse just now what God longs to see? "
