Whose Religion is Christianity by Lamin Sanneh (The Gospel beyond the West).
We should all have a dose of religious Humility if there is such a think.... It is natural for us to judge other people's faith or expressions of faith by our own standards. Have you ever considered that we could all be right from God's perspective? (I can hear the big BUTs, even in myself)
Conversion is not to a dogma, belief, religion, a person... But conversion is to God. So it goes without saying that our greatest achievement in reaching out to people is to bring them to see and meet God by themselves (by the way - this should also be our greatest pleasure and joy).
The Bible is very translatable, it wasn't even written in the language that Jesus spoke (for the most part). So from the start the disciples had to translate the words of Jesus. Tribes and cultures across the world have adopted and adapted the Biblical message in their languages without much difficulty with the adoption of the tribal name of God being a necessary bridge to facilitate the integration process.
Two (2) extracts from the book :
1. "If we don't accept the right of people to act freely in what concerns their ultimate destiny, then haven't we violated the most basic principle of their dignity as human beings and as children of God? I think deciding on our own who is and is not a believer reduces religion to personal preference, and religion of that type is but a specimen of strident individualism. If you reject a person's understanding of himself or herself as religious, where would you stop? "

2. "This theocentric notion of the equality of persons is the essential thread of the fabric of a free society based on the rule of law, and has been a major force in the rise of national communities in the West."
